Everything you need to know about Taskara, your personal life dashboard.

Getting Started

What is Taskara?

Taskara is a local-first, encrypted personal dashboard that brings your tasks, goals, habits, finances, health, and more into one customisable space. Everything lives on your device, protected by AES-256 encryption. No accounts, no cloud, no tracking.

The Onboarding Wizard

When you first open Taskara you will be guided through a 7-step welcome tour. You will pick a dashboard persona (like Pathfinder, Hustler, or Monk) that pre-loads a suggested set of widgets. In the final step you can choose a focus area and create your first goal right away. You can skip any step and customise everything later.

Navigating the Dashboard

Your dashboard is an open canvas of widgets arranged on a responsive grid. Drag widgets to reposition them, resize by pulling the bottom-right corner, and right-click any empty space to add new widgets. Tabs across the top let you create separate dashboards for different areas of your life.

Dashboard Basics

Adding Widgets

Right-click on any empty area of the canvas to open the widget menu. Widgets are grouped into Productivity, Tracking, and Stats sections. Click a widget to place it on your dashboard. The grid will automatically find the nearest open space.

Moving and Resizing

Drag any widget by its header to reposition it. Other widgets will shift out of the way and snap to the nearest free space. To resize, pull the handle at the bottom-right corner. Each widget has a set of supported sizes (e.g. Small, Medium, Wide, Tall, Large) that you can also pick from the widget's three-dot menu.

Dashboard Tabs

Create as many dashboard tabs as you like using the + button in the tab bar. Rename a tab by double-clicking its label, reorder tabs by dragging them, and delete from the tab's three-dot menu. Each tab has its own independent grid settings and widgets.

Dashboard Linking

Link dashboards together to aggregate data across tabs. Open a tab's three-dot menu and choose "Link to dashboard" to connect it to another tab. Linked widgets show up as read-only in aggregating widgets like Today and Calendar, marked with a link icon. This is great for seeing your full picture from a single tab.

Grid Settings

Each dashboard has its own grid configuration. Open Settings and go to the Layout tab to adjust columns, gap spacing, and row height. More columns give you finer placement control; fewer columns create a simpler layout.

Layouts & Presets

Preset Personas

Taskara ships with 9 dashboard personas, each tailored to a different focus: Pathfinder (balanced), Hustler (productivity), Monk (mindfulness), Treasurer (finance), Coach (fitness/health), Architect (projects), Gardener (habits/growth), Commander (planning), and Dreamer (goals/journal). Apply them from the onboarding wizard or from Settings > Layout > Preset Layouts.

User Presets

Save your current layout as a named preset under Settings > Layout > My Presets. Presets capture grid settings and widget arrangement (not widget data), so you can quickly switch between layout styles without losing any information.

Layout Snapshots

Each dashboard stores up to 5 layout snapshots. These are point-in-time saves of your widget positions and sizes. Use them as quick undo points before rearranging your dashboard. Manage snapshots from the Layout Snapshots section in Settings.

Widgets: Productivity

Tasks

A classic checklist with priorities (low, medium, high), due dates, and repeating schedules. Assign tasks to a project, or send them to One Thing or Three Wins from the three-dot menu. Completed tasks can be cleared to keep your list tidy without losing history. Drag to reorder.

Projects

Group related work into project cards. Each project can have a cover image, a list of nested tasks, and links to Kanban boards and Goals. Expand a project card to see and manage its tasks. Drag to reorder projects.

Kanban

A column-based board for visual workflow management. Drag items between columns to track progress. Link Kanban items to Project widgets for bidirectional sync, so completing a task in either place keeps both in sync. Unlink a project from the board without deleting it using the item's dropdown menu.

Goals

Set goals with due dates, optional images, and an interactive progress bar you can drag to update manually. Link goals to projects so that task completions automatically roll up into goal progress. Rich card layout with a Lottie-animated checkbox for that satisfying completion moment.

One Thing

Your single most important task for the day. Set it manually or push any task here with "Set as One Thing" from a task's menu (auto-creates the widget if needed). Resets daily. Checking it off syncs back to the source task and fills slot 1 of Three Wins.

Three Wins

Capture three daily accomplishments. Slot 1 is reserved for your One Thing (auto-filled when you complete it). Push tasks here with "Add to Three Wins" from any task menu. A ring counter with an animated progress arc tracks how many wins you have logged today. Resets daily.

Pomodoro

A focus timer with an SVG arc dial. Set your work and break intervals, then start the timer to stay in the zone. Great alongside the One Thing widget for dedicated deep work sessions.

Calendar

A 7-day strip or full month view that automatically pulls dates from all your widgets (task due dates, goal deadlines, etc.). Events are colour-coded by priority. Click any event to jump to its source widget via a floating popover.

Today

A daily command centre that aggregates data from across your dashboard. Shows a personalised greeting, streak nudges, your One Thing, Three Wins, overdue tasks, today's tasks, and goals. Items from linked dashboards appear as read-only entries with a link icon. No data of its own; everything is pulled live from other widgets.

Widgets: Tracking

Streaks

Tracks your daily completion streak. In "Tasks only" mode it counts task completions; in "All activity" mode it also includes journaling, mood logs, fitness, health check-ins, One Thing, Three Wins, and habits. Miss a day and the streak resets. A great motivator to stay consistent.

Habits

Build daily habits with optional targets (e.g. "Drink water x8"). Each habit row shows a trail of streak dots for recent days, plus a count badge and checkbox. Suggestion chips make it easy to add common habits. Completions feed into the Streaks and History widgets.

Mood

Log your mood on a 7-point scale from Awful to Amazing. Features an animated liquid orb that shifts colour with your mood, surrounded by a frosted glass frame. Entries include timestamps for accurate history. A built-in chart shows your mood over time. Your current mood also tints today's journal entries.

Journal

A chat-style personal journal. Your entries appear as right-aligned bubbles, optionally tinted with your current mood colour. Daily writing prompts rotate at the top to spark reflection. Edit or delete any entry by hovering over it. Date dividers keep your timeline organised.

Fitness

Track daily activities across 6 defaults plus up to 4 custom types. Log activity on the checkbox screen, then flip to the graph view for a stacked bar chart with a trend line. An SVG ring shows weekly or monthly progress against your target. Navigate through past periods with arrow controls. Includes daily motivational messages and a targets/settings panel.

Health

A 4-page carousel covering Dashboard, Check-in, History, and Settings. Tracks BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, and body fat percentage (US Navy method) with a composite health score shown as a colour-coded arc gauge. Gender-aware calculations, metric/imperial toggle, and smooth Catmull-Rom history charts for week, month, or year views.

Cherry Blossom

A passive decorative bonsai tree that blooms as you complete tasks. Every few completions trigger a growth cycle with petal burst particles and sparkle effects. Miss a day and the tree withers slightly (down to a minimum of 10%). A gentle visual reminder of your momentum, with 20 rotating encouraging messages.

Widgets: Finance

Net Worth

Track your assets and liabilities with a mirrored bar chart that dynamically adjusts its centre line based on your asset-to-liability ratio. Three view modes: Current (live snapshot), Monthly (12-month navigable history), and Yearly (all-time). Stacked bars are colour-coded per item. Supports 8 currencies. Daily history snapshots are saved automatically.

Budget

A monthly spending tracker with 7 default categories (customisable). A pill-shaped stacked bar shows total spend at a glance, with a toggle for per-category vertical fill bars. Expand any category to see and edit individual expenses. At the end of each month, data archives to history automatically. Supports multiple currencies.

Savings

Set a savings target and watch a frosted glass jar fill up with an animated texture as you add deposits. The fill level represents your progress towards the goal. Expand the deposit history to review or remove entries. When you hit your target, a "Goal reached" badge appears. Compact sizes show a horizontal bar variant.

Debt

The reverse of Savings. A red-filled jar starts at 100% and drains as you make payments. Track your outstanding balance, view payment history, and celebrate with confetti when you are debt-free. Uses the same frosted glass infrastructure as Savings with a bold red static texture overlay.

Income

Manage income sources with recurring and passive flags. Set a monthly target and track progress with a fill bar. Toggle between a stacked bar chart and a trend line for historical views. Default sources include Salary, Freelance, Dividends, and Other. Recurring sources auto-populate each month after reset.

Tip: All finance widgets support the same 8-currency picker (USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, AUD, CAD, CHF, CNY). Set your currency once from any finance widget's settings area.

Widgets: Stats & Misc

Stats

Summary stat cards giving you a quick numerical overview of your dashboard activity. Automatically pulls from your tasks, goals, and other active widgets.

Progress

An SVG line chart tracking how many tasks you complete each day. Supports week and month views with animated draw-in transitions. A simple visual way to see your daily productivity at a glance.

History

A read-only timeline that aggregates activity from every widget: task completions, journal entries, mood logs, streaks, habit check-offs, fitness activity, health check-ins, financial changes, and cherry blossom growth. Filter by category using the pills at the top (All, Tasks, Journal, Mood, Finance, Fitness). Date group dividers keep the feed organised.

Affirmations

Daily affirmations drawn from a library of 100+ built-in messages, plus any custom ones you add. Three modes: Mix (both), Default (built-in only), or Mine (custom only). A 30-day cooldown prevents repeats. Shuffle with a tap for a fresh message.

Notes

A simple, always-available textarea for quick thoughts, reminders, or scratch notes. No frills, just a place to type.

Data & Security

Encryption

Taskara uses AES-256-GCM encryption with a key derived from your password via PBKDF2 (100,000 iterations). Your password never leaves your device and is only held in memory while the app is open. Set, change, or remove your password from Settings > Data. When locked, the app shows a lock screen that requires your password to continue.

Auto-Save & File Save/Load

Every change is automatically saved to your device's local storage. You can also save your data to an encrypted JSON file (default name: taskara.json) or load from one using Settings > Data. On desktop (Tauri), a native file dialog opens; in the browser, the standard File System Access API is used.

Export to Excel

Export your active dashboard's data to a multi-sheet .xlsx workbook from Settings > Data > "Export to Excel". Sheets include Tasks, Goals, Net Worth, Budget, Savings, Debt, Journal, Health, Fitness, and Mood.

PDF Reports

Generate a comprehensive PDF report of your dashboard from Settings. Choose a time period (weekly, monthly, quarterly, or custom range). The report includes a cover page with the Taskara logo, stat summaries, narrative text about your progress, and chart visualisations for each widget that has data in the chosen period. If a date range has no data, you will see a friendly message explaining which months are available.

Tip: All your data accumulates indefinitely with no automatic trimming. A typical year of heavy use generates roughly 2-4 MB of data, so there is no need to worry about storage limits.

Settings

Accent Colour & Theme

Choose from 8 preset accent colours or set a custom one. Toggle dark mode on or off. Your theme applies across all dashboards, widgets, and charts.

Grid Customisation

Adjust columns, gap spacing, and row height per dashboard from the Layout tab. These settings determine how tightly or loosely widgets are packed on your canvas.

Premium

Premium is a one-time purchase that unlocks Taskara's complete widget set and power features: the daily focus trio (Today, One Thing, Three Wins), the Habits tracker, the full finance suite (Net Worth, Budget, Savings, Debt, Income), the wellness suite (Mood, Journal, Health, Fitness), the Cherry Blossom tree, unlimited dashboards, Excel and PDF exports, auto-save, preset layouts, and custom accent colours. The free version stays fully functional forever, so you can upgrade whenever you're ready.

Tips & Shortcuts

Undo / Redo

Most actions can be undone. Taskara maintains an undo/redo history for all widget data changes. Use your system's standard shortcut (Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z to undo, Ctrl+Shift+Z / Cmd+Shift+Z to redo).

Send to Tab

Move a widget to a different dashboard tab using its three-dot menu and selecting "Send to tab". This works for most content widgets (Projects, Goals, Kanban, Net Worth, Budget, Savings, Debt, Health, Fitness, Notes, Journal, Income). Moving a Kanban board will ask if you also want to move its linked projects.

Cross-Widget Sync

Taskara's widgets talk to each other extensively. Here is how the connections work:

Tasks and Projects: Tasks can be assigned to projects. Completing a task in either widget updates both.

Kanban and Projects: Link Kanban items to project widgets for bidirectional status tracking.

Goals and Projects: Link a goal to a project so task completions roll up into goal progress automatically.

One Thing and Three Wins: Completing your One Thing fills the first Three Wins slot automatically. Both sync back to the source task.

Mood and Journal: If you have logged a mood today, your journal entries inherit that mood's colour as a subtle background tint.

Streaks: In "All activity" mode, streaks count completions from Tasks, Fitness, Journal, Mood, Health, One Thing, Three Wins, and Habits.

Cherry Blossom: Reads task completion counts and grows its bloom level accordingly.

Calendar: Pulls due dates and deadlines from Tasks, Projects, and Goals, colour-coded by priority.

Today: Aggregates data from One Thing, Three Wins, Tasks, Goals, and Streaks into a single daily view.

History: Merges activity from all widgets into a unified, filterable timeline.

Progress: Charts daily task completions (including cleared tasks) across all task-based widgets.

Tip: When you "Set as One Thing" or "Add to Three Wins" and the target widget does not exist yet, Taskara will create it for you automatically.
